THE MORON MAJORITY

Uday Hussein

Uday Hussein, eldest son of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, won a seat in the National Assembly (parliament) by a sweeping 99.99 percent of the vote. Saddam controls Iraq's parliamentary elections, which are neither free nor fair. Every candidate is a member of either Saddam's Baath party or one of the few parties that exist because they have pledged loyalty to Saddam's regime. Uday, who was once regarded as Iraq's heir apparent, now poses a new threat to his younger brother Qusai - and ultimately his father Saddam. Uday will also likely win the position of Assembly speaker in April. While the National Assembly is not a powerful body, the speaker has considerable influence in the regime and attends meetings of the Revolutionary Command Council, the all-powerful decision making body led by Saddam.

A December 1996 assassination attempt left Uday partially paralyzed, prompting Saddam to focus on grooming the younger Qusai to be Iraq's next leader. If Uday becomes parliamentary speaker, it will be his first position of governmental power since before the attempt on his life. Uday, 35, has always played a public role in Iraq and currently publishes the influential Iraqi daily Babel, which often functions as a government mouthpiece. He heads Iraq's Olympic Committee and the Iraqi Football Federation, making him popular among Iraqis. The younger Qusai, 33, has worked behind the scenes for years gaining power and support in Iraq's security services. He heads the elite Republican Guards as well as the special security agency in charge of protecting the president. As deputy commander of the army, Qusai also commands the northern military region, which oversees Kurdish areas and is intended to respond to Turkish invasions. Qusai also has significant influence and support in the Iraqi intelligence service, Mukhabarat.

Now, Uday will be able to use his election victory as the first big step in a campaign to challenge his brother's pre-eminence in the Iraqi succession struggle. In the past year, Qusai has solidified his power base and chipped away at Uday's while he struggled to return to the spotlight. In July, shortly after walking without assistance for the first time since the assassination attempt, Uday publicly made comments suggesting he was ready to return to the state's security and political apparatus. Qusai responded by purging the military and security apparatus of officers loyal to Uday. Saddam has not prevented Uday's resurgence, indicating tacit approval. If Uday wins parliamentary speaker - a likely possibility - he may try to rally support in the powerful Revolutionary Command Council away from his brother, who also attends the meetings. He may also try to regain influence in the military and security apparatus as well. If this occurs, it will undoubtedly spark a significant response from Qusai. Uday's mere comments in July were enough to set off purges by his younger brother. If Uday does have ambitions of edging out Qusai, he will have to be tactful. Qusai clearly has more power and resources at his disposal, as well as the apparent support of his father.

It seems clear that Saddam has chosen Qusai as his successor. Saddam appointed Qusai to all of the high posts he now holds and has, in the past, had to rein in Uday who has a reputation as a short-tempered trouble-maker. In 1995, Saddam briefly jailed Uday after he shot an uncle in the leg during an argument. In December 1999, Saddam decorated Qusai with three prestigious military awards. Then in January, Saddam gave Uday a single medal of valor, one of the three awards Qusai received a month earlier. Saddam relies heavily on the highly efficient security agencies, commanded by Qusai, to keep him alive and in power. Uday must be careful not to undermine his brother so much that it affects Qusai's ability to control the agencies he heads. Any attempt by Uday to weaken Qusai or those agencies will not be taken lightly by a ruler known to execute family members. Saddam may well have set up the conflict to ensure that neither son is able to become too ambitious for the presidency. While Qusai controls the military and security apparatus, Uday enjoys widespread popular support. If both sons play to their strength, they exploit the already tense rift between the government and the people. If Uday undermines his brother - at the expense, or perceived expense, of the Iraqi regime's security - he may also undermine his father, which could result in his own demise.

More about Uday

Al-Ittihad newspaper said the 35-year-old won every voter's support in most of the polling stations, where 10 candidates were standing for five seats. The paper's figures suggest that only about 30 out of nearly 290,000 voters did not cast their votes for the president's son. In interview on Al-Jazeera satellite TV on Monday, Mr Hussein denied nepotism had played any part in his candidature. "I was included in the list of nominations approved by the (ruling Baath) party on the basis of its perspective on the capabilities of the party's youths who can occupy seats in the parliament," he told the Qatari-owned station.

Uday made a rare public appearance when he voted shortly before polls closed. He arrived amid high security, reportedly in a convoy of luxury cars. He still walked with a limp from injuries he suffered in a 1996 assassination attempt. "We will do our best for the prosperity of our great people, and whatever is possible in the way of serving the brave men of Iraq and help the loyal and glorious Iraqi women and we ask God to help us," he said to reporters after casting his vote. It is widely assumed that Mr Hussein will take the influential position of parliamentary speaker. Candidates for the 220 elected seats in parliament are required to support the principles of the Saddam Hussein's Baath party.

Iraqi President Saddam Hussein's eldest son, Uday, has met with success in his first foray into politics, receiving 99.99% backing in parliamentary elections in his Baghdad constituency. Uday's candidacy is seen as a move to take on a more prominent public profile but until now he has been best known for his playboy image, unrivalled trading and media empire and fearsome reputation for brutality. The 35-year-old has accumulated a host of roles, most notably ownership of the leading Iraqi daily newspaper Babel, and chairmanship of the country's Olympic Committee, football association and journalists' union. He also heads TV and radio stations, is chairman of the board of seven weekly newspapers and owns a night-club. Uday's personal income is estimated to be hundreds of millions of dollars a year. Iraqi opposition groups allege that his ventures include oil smuggling on a massive scale. For many years, Uday acted as the de facto prime minister of Iraq. He was his father's favourite son and considered his heir. But five years ago, he was sidelined after provoking a bloody family rift that led to the defection of Saddam's two sons-in-law to Jordan.

He partially redeemed himself when he lured the defectors back to Baghdad and personally took part in their execution. A year later, would-be assassins sprayed Uday's white Mercedes with bullets while he was on his way to a party in Mansur, a fashionable district of Baghdad. The injuries to his legs and spine appeared to leave him partially paralysed. It is believed the attack was carried out by ordinary Iraqis seeking revenge for Uday's legendary depredations, in particular his notorious pursuit of women. Later, a member of the group which said it had carried out the attack told a British newspaper that, although they had failed to kill Uday, they believed they had eliminated him as a political leader.

In the aftermath of that assassination attempt, Iraqi opposition groups said Uday's younger brother, Qusay was given increasing power. He took charge of the Fedayeen unit (Arabic for fighters who will sacrifice themselves), which was founded by the older son. This was interpreted as a sign that Uday had become too frail to be considered the heir apparent any longer. After his discharge from hospital in June 1997, there were reports that he was suffering severe depression and was subject to violent rages. A month after his release, he shot dead a young bodyguard, and a week later was reported to have killed a woman he had brought to the presidential palace to seduce. Uday acquired a fearsome reputation as a young man.

As a 15-year-old, he was rumoured to have taken part in a massacre of cabinet ministers that consolidated his father's grip on power. Other stories have been told of his fleet of sports cars and of the women he abducted at gunpoint. In 1988, he is alleged to have beaten to death one of Saddam's aides, accusing him of playing the intermediary between a woman and his father. He was sent into exile in Geneva, but returned to take direct charge of the Iraqi football team's attempt to qualify for the 1994 World Cup in the United States. But there were reports that Uday had football players humiliated, beaten and tortured for playing badly or after losing critical matches. Fifa, international football's governing body, launched an investigation, and said later it had found no evidence of torture. But last year, one of the country's star players, Sharar Haydar Mohaad al Hadithi, told the Sunday Times newspaper that he had undergone torture ordered by Uday. Nowadays, Uday is more "reflective and mature", according to his aides. Footage has repeatedly been shown on Iraqi television of him receiving foreign dignitaries and awarding medals to the fedayeen, the paramilitary group he has taken charge of again. And two years ago, he published his 300-page political science doctorate as a supplement inside Babel. It dealt with the effect of post-Cold War conditions on America's superpower status. Public proof of Uday's physical rehabilitation came last December when Iraqi television showed him swimming in the Tigris river.

Interview with Uday

Uday Saddam Hussein, eldest son of the Iraqi president, has given an interview to the Qatari satellite TV station Al-Jazeera TV. Uday was elected to parliament in a Baghdad constituency on Tuesday. Al-Jazeera's correspondent Shakir Hamid asked the questions.

Is your nomination for the membership of the Iraqi National Assembly a new method of practising political activity, or is it a step towards activating the parliament's role in political life in Iraq? As is known to you and to most world news agencies, there was a party list. I have been a member of the Ba'ath Party since 1975. I was included in the list of nominations approved by the party on the basis of its perspective of the capabilities of the party's youths who can occupy seats in the parliament.

But observers believe that your nomination for the membership of the National Assembly could be part of prior planning to assume the speakership of the National Assembly? You are talking about a democratic experience. Electing a speaker of the National Assembly is a democratic practice that is based on voting. This will be decided when the voting takes place, God willing. There are other comrades who have longer experience in the party and struggle.

As we are talking about parliamentary elections, do you not believe that Iraq is lagging far behind in terms of party pluralism? I will ask you this: Do you not see that the situation through which our country is passing is extraordinary? I do not mean to avoid answering your question. In 1991, my father announced the possibility of having party pluralism. As is known, my father does not go back on what he says. This was confirmed a few months ago in the meetings of the Revolution Command Council, which selected the parties which are affiliated to and supportive of the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party. We are adopting this approach. Due to the extraordinary situation, however, we need to make very accurate calculations, because we do not want a margin of profit against a margin of loss, no matter how small.

Who did you elect? I have elected three comrades, two youths, a veteran struggler, a comrade Iraqi woman and an independent candidate

GOD BLESS AMERICA!

On Tuesday, September 11, 2001, at 8:45am New York local time, One World Trade Center, the north tower, was hit by a hijacked 767 commercial jet airplane, loaded with fuel for a trans-continental flight. Two World Trade Center, the south tower, was hit by a similar hijacked jet 18 minutes later at 9:03am. (In separate but related attacks, the Pentagon building near Washington D.C. was hit by a hijacked 757 at 9:43am, and at 10:10am, a fourth hijacked jetliner crashed in Pennsylvania.)   The south tower, WTC 2, which had been hit second, was the first to suffer a complete structural collapse at 10:05am, 62 minutes after being hit itself, 80 minutes after the first impact. The north tower, WTC 1, then also collapsed at 10:29am, 104 minutes after being hit. WTC 7, a substantial 47 story office building in its own right, built in 1987, was damaged by the collapsing towers, caught fire, and later in the afternoon also totally collapsed.

The list of collapsed buildings (as confirmed by the New York Times through Saturday, 2001.0915) included all seven buildings of the World Trade center complex — including WTC 6, the U.S Customs House to the north; WTC 3, the 22 story Marriot World Trade Center hotel just west of Tower Two; and WTC 4 and 5, the Plaza Buildings to the east (although satellite images suggest much of WTC 5, the north Plaza Building, was still standing). Other nearby buildings were significantly damaged, including the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, and One Liberty Plaza, a 54 floor, 743' tall building across Church Street to the east.

About 2800 people died in the attack. The recovery and site clearing process officially concluded on May 30, 2002 with 1796 people still remain unrecovered. 1.8 million tons of debris was removed from the disaster site.
